How to Use Your TravelSmart Neighbourhood Map
Your Neighbourhood map helps users with their TravelSmart planning. Maybe you’re buying or renting a new home and want to find the right neighbourhood to fit your specific lifestyle needs. Or you’re considering walking or cycling for your daily work or school commute. Or maybe you simply want to map out the best transit route for all your errands. Your Neighbourhood map can help!
For Settlement Decisions
Use the map to find a community that provides transportation options that fit your lifestyle – whether that means quick access to amenities on foot, frequent transit service or an easy, cost-effective commute by car.
A few tips:
- The walkscore and transit score, found at the top of the map, tell you at a glance how easy it is to get to amenities on foot or on transit within the highlighted section of the map. Move around the map to see how different neighbourhoods compare.
- Zoom in on the map to see more neighbourhood details.
- To see detailed transporation information, use the icons to the right of the map to turn on transit stops and stations, walking routes, cycling routes or traffic information.
- Use the lists below the map to display the services that are most important to you - schools, community centers, entertainment options, services and more.
- To estimate how long it'll take you to walk or cycle from your new home, use our walking or cycling distance finder – just drop the center of the circle on your house.
- To choose a home that's walking distance from school or work, drop the center of the circle on your school or work, and consider homes within the circle.
Day-to-Day TravelSmart Planning
You can use the map to plan out any of your travel needs - whether cycling to work, taking transit to the hockey game, or walking to the grocery store, all your day-to-day travel can be planned out using Your Neighbourhood map.
A few tips:
- Use the TravelSmart distance finder to figure out how close things really are to your home or office. You may find that it’s just as quick to walk to your next meeting as it is to get the car out of the garage.
- Use the distance finder combined with the amenities lists, and you may be surprised to see how many day-to-day errands can be done within a 10 minute walk or a 5 minute cycle (while getting some exercise at the same time!).
- To learn about the safest cycling routes in your neighbourhood and beyond, use the transportation buttons to the right of the map to view cycling routes and the cycling distance finder.
- To find the best times to travel by car, and the routes to take to minimize how long you sit in traffic, click the car icon to the right of the map.
- To see transit stops and stations near your home or place of work, turn on transit information. Click a stop or station to find out more details, or to plan a transit trip.
