Whether you're a two-car family or a tribe of eco-enthusiasts, there's a place for TravelSmart in your life. Your travel options are actually quite fluid - if you want them to be. Who says you always have to drive to work or take the bus to school? Mix it up! Make it an adventure and explore your neighbourhood! Incorporate elements of walking, cycling, driving and public transit into your routine and start enjoying the journey.

Travelsmart Tips for Your Family

  • Encourage young kids to walk or ride their bicycles to school. Better yet, walk or ride with them.
  • Ride-share, or carpool, to work. If that's not an option, consider teleworking, or working from home one or a few days a week.
  • Walk to your local shops and enjoy some window shopping, take some time to chat with your neighbours, and stop to pet all the puppies.
  • Set up a shared ride system with the parents of your kids' friends if they're in the same activities, so only one car's making the rounds.
  • Plan family outings that also explore different transportation modes as part of the fun. Taking a bus or the Sea Bus or SkyTrain is exciting for children and you'll get to explore neighbourhoods you might otherwise overlook.
  • Take public transit when heading out to an event like a festival or sport game, and beat the crowds circling the parking lots.

TravelSmart Benefits

  • Teaching your kids to cycle and how to integrate it into their lives will give them lifelong benefits. The physical exercise will keep them fit for life and allow the entire family to enjoy an activity together.
  • By leaving your car at home, you'll help reduce harmful pollutants in your neighbourhood, thus improving both your community's air quality and overall health.
  • Taking your family on public transit is also a fun and easy way to teach children life skills about interacting with different people in their community.
  • By walking or cycling more often in your neighbourhood, you'll be helping to create more livable and walkable communities, which will create safer environments for your entire family.
