According to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, heart disease and stroke take 1 in 3 Canadians before their time, and is the #1 killer of women.

The best way to protect yourself against the risks is to eat healthy and be active. The Heart & Stroke Foundation has some great tips on healthy eating, and we’ve got some tips to help you keep up the physical activity part.

The Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines recommend a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity per week, in bouts of 10 minutes or more.

Feel like you can’t find the time to fit in your 150 minutes a week? Here are some tips:

  1. This weekend, chose one activity that involves getting there by bike or on foot. That way you’re getting in exercise without it being the focus of the activity.
  2. As the weather warms up, why not start cycling to work? Stop thinking and talking about it, and just try it. You’ll be glad you did.

  3. Impromptu dance party for one (or more).  When was the last time you cut a rug at home? Throw on some high energy tunes and really shake it.

  4. When was the last time you headed out your front door and explored your neighbourhood? Lace up some comfortable shoes, and take a brisk walk – or better yet, jog.

  5. Skip the escalator or elevator,  take the stairs.

  6. Take the bus and walk –when you have the time, get off a stop earlier for some extra walking.

  7. Walk and talk:  Why make coffee dates or schedule meetings indoors? Get out and walk while you exchange ideas.

Do something today that your future self will thank you for.
